Krakow entrepreneur and rally driver Rafał Sonik confirms he has received an offer to run for mayor from the Civic Coalition, but stresses he would only enter as an independent candidate.
The Decision Process
Sonik, a native of Krakow, confirmed in a conversation with the Polish Press Agency (PAP) that he has received a proposal from the Civic Coalition’s circle. He emphasized that if he decides to proceed, he will remain an independent candidate.
“I am considering running in the election, but I need one to two weeks to make a reasonable, balanced, and responsible decision,” Sonik stated. He noted that governance is a form of service that requires thorough preparation.
Political Context and Stability
Sonik pointed out that the recent recall referendum revealed significant weaknesses in the current electoral system. He added that his potential candidacy would require him to take a firm stance regarding the stability of city management.
“Being a conscious citizen who points out threats and tries to remedy them is incomparably more important than any formal position,” he remarked.
Coalition Strategy and Election Timeline
Earlier media reports suggested Sonik might run with the support of the Civic Coalition and the Polish People’s Party (PSL). Prime Minister Donald Tusk indicated during a Friday press conference that a coalition candidate would be announced on Monday, favoring a recognizable figure from outside traditional politics.
Following the successful recall of Aleksander Miszalski on May 24, the date for the early mayoral election has yet to be determined. The electoral code requires the vote to take place within 90 days of the referendum results being announced.
Declared Candidates
Several political representatives have already announced their bids for the office, including Michał Drewnicki (PiS), Bartosz Bocheńczak (Konfederacja), Aleksandra Owca (Razem), and Grażyna Zofia Świat (Non-Partisan Local Government Activists of Lesser Poland). Also running are Michał Klimek (Confederation of the Polish Crown), Sławomir Pietrzyk (Social Democracy of Poland), and former Supreme Audit Office president Marian Banaś.
