Rail Crossing Commission Identifies Error After Near-Tragedy

The PKP Polish Rail Lines commission has determined that an employee’s lack of concentration caused barriers to prematurely open at a railway crossing in Nowa Wieś Wielka, narrowly missing cars in December.

Incident at Nowa Wieś Wielka

The incident occurred at the beginning of December last year in Nowa Wieś Wielka near Bydgoszcz (Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship). The Intercity ‘Bachus’ train passed through a guarded railway crossing despite the barriers being still raised at that time. It narrowly missed passenger cars that had already entered the crossing. A recording of this situation appeared online at that time.

Commission Findings

PKP Polish Rail Lines appointed a special commission. It has already completed its work. The commission determined that the cause of the premature opening of the barriers at the crossing was an error by an employee of Polish Rail Lines, caused by insufficient concentration while performing duties.

Employee Consequences

Disciplinary consequences have been taken against the employee, according to Przemysław Zieliński of the PKP PLK press team in an interview with TVN24. The employee has also been transferred to another position that is not related to railway traffic operations.
