Donald Tusk is reportedly considering Dakar Rally winner Rafał Sonik as a non-political candidate for the upcoming Krakow mayoral elections to distance the Civic Coalition from potential political fallout.
The Search for a Non-Political Candidate
Rafał Sonik, a prominent entrepreneur and Dakar Rally champion, has emerged as a potential mayoral candidate. Sources indicate Prime Minister Donald Tusk seeks an outsider to minimize party responsibility should the snap elections result in a defeat.
While the Prime Minister previously considered two professors from Krakow universities, both declined to run. Sonik’s recent public interest in the candidacy has aligned with the party’s strategic need to divert media attention from internal party failures.
Uncertainty Surrounding the Announcement
Despite Prime Minister Tusk’s suggestion that the candidate would be unveiled this Monday, internal sources at the party and the candidate’s camp remain uninformed about the official presentation schedule.
Public sentiment regarding the current political landscape is divided. An SW Research poll conducted in late May indicates that 48.5 percent of respondents view the removal of Aleksander Miszalski from his post as a defeat for the Civic Coalition, while 25.6 percent disagree.
Election Landscape and Potential Contenders
The New Left and the Civic Coalition are both expected to announce their respective candidates on June 8. It remains possible that the Civic Coalition may form a joint ticket with the Polish People’s Party (PSL).
Daria Gosek-Popiołek, a Left-wing MP, has signaled her intent to run, while other names previously discussed by Civic Coalition officials include Monika Piątkowska, Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, and Paweł Kowal.
Declared candidates currently include Aleksandra Owca, Michał Drewnicki, Grażyna Zofia Świat, Bartosz Bocheńczak, Michał Klimek, and Marian Banaś.
