Record Apple Acquisition: Giant Spends Billions to Catch Up in AI Race

Apple has acquired Q.ai, a stealth-mode startup specializing in “silent speech” technology, to bolster its AI ecosystem and enhance future wearable devices.

What is Q.ai?

Q.ai is a company that has operated in stealth mode until now. The startup specializes in breakthrough technology for analyzing so-called “silent speech.” Their developed machine learning algorithms can interpret facial micro-movements and mimicry, allowing for the control of digital devices almost without performing visible gestures or voice commands.

Why Apple Decided on This Step

The acquisition of Q.ai is interpreted as an attempt to catch up in the AI field. Although Apple recently announced integration with Google’s Gemini system and cooperation with OpenAI (ChatGPT), Q.ai’s unique technology is intended to become the foundation for future features within the Apple Intelligence ecosystem.

Johny Srouji, Apple’s Vice President of Hardware Technologies, emphasized that Q.ai is a pioneering company that combines imaging with machine learning in an incredibly creative way.

A Returning Visionary

It is worth noting that Q.ai is led by Aviad Maizels, for whom this is the second sale of a company to the Cupertino giant. Previously, Apple bought his startup PrimeSense, responsible for Kinect technology, which laid the foundations for the FaceID function in iPhones.

Deep Integration and Future Wearables

This historic acquisition shows that Apple is betting on deep integration of hardware with advanced analysis of human behaviors, which could completely change the way we use wearable devices in the future.
