Lithuanian authorities issued a red alert in the Vilnius region on Tuesday, prompting the evacuation of top government officials to shelters and the temporary suspension of all flights at Vilnius Airport.
Emergency Procedures and Official Evacuations
The military declared a red alert in the Vilnius region, while several other areas were placed under yellow alerts. Vilnius Airport temporarily suspended operations, though activities resumed once the warning was lifted.
Residents of the capital were advised to seek immediate shelter. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda and Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene were among those evacuated to secure locations during the security event.
Official Clarifications on Security Reports
Lithuanian police and emergency services refuted rumors that a drone had crashed within the country’s territory, stating no such incidents were reported. The National Crisis Management Centre confirmed the alert was issued after a drone was detected over Belarus flying toward Lithuania, though its origin remains unverified.
Regional Tensions and Regional Response
On the same day, Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur reported that an F-16 fighter jet intercepted and downed a drone in Estonian airspace, suspected to be of Ukrainian origin. Simultaneously, the Latvian military reported unauthorized drone incursions into its airspace.
Russian Foreign Intelligence accused Latvia of permitting Ukrainian drone attacks from its territory, a claim dismissed by Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze. Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhij Tychyj stated that Russia is intentionally redirecting Ukrainian drones over Baltic states using electronic warfare to fuel propaganda, and issued an apology to Estonia and Baltic partners.
