Rescue Operation in Biebrza National Park for Ill 70-Year-Old

A 70-year-old tourist required immediate assistance during a hike in Biebrza National Park on April 1st, prompting a challenging rescue operation.

Emergency Response Initiated

The incident occurred on Monday, April 1st. A group of three tourists was hiking the red trail in Biebrza National Park. According to police press officer mł.asp. Anna Klimowicz, the 70-year-old mother of one of the hikers suddenly felt unwell near the village of Mostki. Her 53-year-old son-in-law called for help.

The man provided his location to emergency services and attempted to meet the approaching police. However, he became disoriented and indicated a different location than where the hiking group was actually situated. Poor weather conditions and the terrain prevented access by vehicle.

Successful Rescue After Difficult Terrain Traverse

After walking several kilometers through marshy terrain, police officers located the women. All three hikers were fatigued but unharmed, according to officials. They were transported to a hotel by firefighters from the OSP in Trzcianne.

Park Conditions Demand Caution

Police emphasize that Biebrza National Park, Poland’s largest park, is dominated by swamps and peat bogs, requiring tourists to be well-prepared. While most trails have safe boardwalks and bridges, venturing off-trail onto unstable ground can be very dangerous, leading to getting stuck or lost.

Recent years have seen significant peat bog fires in the park, which are difficult to extinguish and pose risks to visitors. Open marshland also carries risks of dehydration and heatstroke. Authorities urge hikers to stay on marked trails and avoid solo trips, especially into the wetlands.

In February 2025, the Biebrza National Park directorate closed some trail sections, including the Szuszalewo-Nowy Lipsk floating bridge, due to record-low water levels to prevent potential accidents and entrapment.
