A 56-year-old doctor from the Lesko hospital died Sunday after being struck by a car while cycling in the Bieszczady mountains.
Doctor Struck by Car in Lesko
The incident occurred on Sunday on a road in the Bieszczady region. The driver of a Mini Cooper, while overtaking three cyclists, collided with one of them.
The 56-year-old victim sustained a severe head injury despite wearing a helmet.
Driver’s Maneuver Under Investigation
“The driver did not ensure they had enough space to safely complete the maneuver,” stated asp. sztab. Katarzyna Fechner of the Lesko County Police, according to Brzozów Info.
The driver attempted to avoid a collision with an oncoming BMW, swerving sharply to the right and hitting the front wheel of one of the cyclists.
Victim Identified as Dr. Jerzy Bentkowski
The injured man was transported to the Sanok hospital, but doctors were unable to save his life. The deceased cyclist was identified as Dr. Jerzy Bentkowski, an orthopedic surgeon and head of medical affairs at the Lesko County Hospital.

Through his work, knowledge and responsibility, he contributed to the high standard of medical care and the development of the facility, always putting the patient’s well-being first,” read a statement from the hospital.
Investigation Underway
An investigation is currently underway on charges of causing a fatal traffic accident. Authorities are analyzing evidence from the scene.
