Retirement After 10 Years of Work: What ZUS Pays and Why It Is So Low

Reaching the age of 65 with only 10 years of service leaves many Poles with a minimal ZUS pension, as short employment periods preclude eligibility for the state-guaranteed monthly minimum.

Pension Entitlement for Short Careers

Reaching retirement age prompts many Poles to review their employment history. Individuals who are 65 and have only 10 years of service will receive a pension from ZUS amounting to several hundred zlotys gross per month, assuming they earned the minimum wage throughout that period.

Polish law guarantees a pension after even one day of legal employment and contribution. However, a short insurance record leads to significant financial consequences and makes it impossible to raise the payout to the statutory minimum.

Why the Pension Benefit Is So Minimal

The main reason for the extremely low amount is the failure to meet the service criteria required for the state-guaranteed minimum. In 2026, the guaranteed minimum pension in Poland is significantly higher than in previous years, but it is not available to everyone.

To receive the minimum amount, an applicant must document a specific service history: 20 years for women and 25 years for men. With only 10 years, the state does not supplement the payment, and ZUS applies a mathematical algorithm based solely on the actual balance of the pension account.

How ZUS Calculates Benefits

The final amount is determined by dividing the accumulated capital by the statistical life expectancy. Officials sum up all indexed pension contributions from the insured’s account, sub-account, and potential initial capital from work prior to 1999.

The resulting capital is divided by the number of months of further life expectancy, as announced annually in March by Statistics Poland (GUS). Because the capital accumulated over 10 years is small, the result yields a monthly payment of only several hundred zlotys.

Tax and Financial Considerations

Income tax is not deducted from these low amounts, as the tax-free allowance protects benefits up to 2,500 zlotys per month. The pensioner pays only a mandatory 9 percent health insurance contribution, which slightly reduces the final payout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Recipients of small pensions are still entitled to the 13th and 14th pension payments, which are paid in full regardless of the base pension amount. Those who have reached retirement age may also continue to work without earnings limits, provided they terminate and restart their employment contract to trigger ZUS payments.

Work under a contract of mandate counts toward the 10-year service record, provided that mandatory pension and disability insurance contributions were paid. If an application is not submitted, the funds remain in the account, continue to be indexed each June, and will result in a higher benefit if claimed later.

Increasing Your Pension Benefit

Individuals with short work histories can seek to increase their income through social programs like the “Mama 4 plus” parental supplement for those who raised at least four children. Additionally, delaying retirement can increase capital and shorten the statistical life expectancy used in the calculation.
