Poland’s Embassy in Mexico warned citizens on February 22 following riots, road blockades, and flight suspensions in Jalisco and neighboring states.
Embassy Warning
On Sunday evening (February 22), the Embassy of Poland in Mexico issued a warning regarding deteriorating security in some regions. The embassy recommended all Polish citizens in Jalisco and neighboring states—Michoacan, Guanajuato, Colima, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, and Nayarit—to follow and adhere to state authorities’ security recommendations.
Flight Suspensions
The Embassy of Mexico in Poland stated that the Security Cabinet is cooperating with state governments to address incidents, with strengthened security services to unblock roads and restore order. The embassy urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information and use only official channels, emphasizing the government’s priority to protect citizens. Information will be updated continuously.
The US State Department appealed to US citizens in Mexico to stay indoors until further notice. Airlines Delta Air Lines, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, and Air Canada suspended flights to Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta.
Background on Riots
The embassy warnings are linked to riots that erupted following the killing of drug cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Osegura Cervantes, known as El Mencho. He was one of the world’s most wanted drug traffickers, with the US offering a $15 million reward for his capture on charges of smuggling large quantities of cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine into the USA.
Ongoing extensive security operations in Mexico are causing road blockades. Chaos erupted at Guadalajara airport after reports of armed men appearing there.
