Road to Morskie Oko Closed Due to Avalanche Risk

The road to Morskie Oko in the Tatra Mountains has been closed indefinitely due to heavy snowfall and significant avalanche danger, authorities announced Tuesday.

Avalanche Threat Prompts Closure

The Tatra National Park (TPN) closed the road from Palenica Białczańska to the shelter at Morskie Oko due to intensified snowfall, following a request from the Tatra Volunteer Rescue Service (TOPR). The closure will remain in effect until the avalanche risk significantly decreases.

A third-degree, substantial avalanche warning is currently in effect in the Tatra Mountains.

Snowpack Instability

TOPR reports that the snowpack on many steep slopes is moderately or weakly bonded, meaning avalanches can be triggered even by minimal additional weight.

Specific Danger Zones

Two areas near Morskie Oko are particularly vulnerable to avalanches. The first is the Żlebu Żandarmerii gully, which releases directly onto the road – it was covered by an avalanche in February 2023. The second is near the Marchwiczny Żleb, where avalanches often break the ice on the lake’s surface.

Warnings for Hikers

TPN authorities are urging tourists to exercise caution and refrain from hiking in the mountains. Trails are currently not marked, and the snow is deep and unstable. Low cloud ceilings are also severely limiting visibility.

Even experienced mountaineers with appropriate winter equipment – such as crampons, ice axes, and avalanche safety gear – and the knowledge to use it may find conditions insufficient for safe travel.

TOPR emphasizes that navigating the Tatras requires significant experience, skill, and the ability to assess local avalanche hazards.

Transportation Disruptions

Heavy snowfall has also caused transportation difficulties in the Podhale region. A fallen tree on Provincial Road No. 969 near Maniów blocked traffic, causing congestion. Drivers in Bukowina Tatrzańska faced challenges with steep inclines, and a snowplow slid into a ditch in Leszczyny.

Snowfall and Forecast

Snowfall in Zakopane has reached approximately 40 cm, with 158 cm on Kasprowy Wierch and 176 cm in the Valley of the Five Polish Lakes. Snowplows are clearing roads, and residents are removing snow from their properties.

Meteorologists predict the snowfall will cease on Saturday, with temperatures gradually rising. Easter Sunday and Monday are expected to bring warmer weather and sunshine. TPN and TOPR advise monitoring current updates and adjusting travel plans accordingly.
