Romanian Man Arrested for Fraudulent Jewelry Scheme

Warsaw police detained a 27-year-old Romanian citizen in Ursynów for alleged fraud, theft, and attempted fraud involving fake gold jewelry.

Arrest and Initial Investigation

Police from the Warsaw Ursynów precinct arrested a 27-year-old Romanian citizen suspected of theft, fraud, and attempted fraud. Investigators believe the man may be linked to similar incidents.

The arrest occurred in late March in Ursynów after officers observed two men, one of whom was aggressively approaching another. Their suspicions led to an immediate intervention.

The Deceptive Scheme

The suspect approached drivers, claiming financial hardship and blocked funds, while posing as a wealthy traveler between Dubai, the UAE, and London. He offered gold-colored jewelry – rings and chains – as collateral for a temporary loan.

In reality, the jewelry was valueless, and the suspect attempted to defraud a victim of 5,000 euros. Police quickly recognized the situation and detained him.

Prior Incidents and Expanding Investigation

Further investigation revealed the suspect had employed a similar tactic previously. In mid-March, he offered a ring to a driver along the S2 highway in exchange for a ride to a gas station, then stole 1,700 złoty from the driver’s wallet.

Police believe similar crimes may have occurred in other parts of Poland, as well as in France and the Netherlands.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

The suspect faces charges of fraud, attempted fraud, and theft. On the prosecutor’s request, the court ordered his temporary arrest.

Fraud carries a potential sentence of up to 8 years imprisonment, while theft carries a potential sentence of up to 5 years.

The investigation is ongoing, and police anticipate further charges and potential victims. The case is being supervised by the Warsaw Ursynów District Prosecutor’s Office.

Public Safety Appeal

Authorities urge caution when interacting with strangers, warning that fraudsters often use time pressure, evoke sympathy, and create a false sense of credibility to obtain financial gain.
