Romanowski Claims 281,000 PLN in Parliamentary Allowances While Abroad for 1.5 Years

Although Marcin Romanowski has been residing outside of Poland for 18 months, he continues to charge over a quarter of a million zloty in public funds to maintain his parliamentary office.

Public Funding for an Absent MP

Marcin Romanowski’s parliamentary office reported expenses totaling 281,439.93 PLN for the 2025 fiscal year, according to official Sejm Chancellery data. This financial activity is notable because the Law and Justice (PiS) politician has been living abroad since December 2024.

In late January 2026, a summary of annual expenses was prepared in Biłgoraj and subsequently signed electronically by Romanowski from his current location, which is believed to be the United States following his earlier stay in Hungary.

Breakdown of Operational Expenses

Despite the MP’s absence, the office incurred significant fixed costs throughout the year. The majority of the budget was allocated to staffing, with 191,325.70 PLN spent on employment contracts and 14,000.00 PLN on other forms of engagement.

Additional office expenditures included 41,581.81 PLN for rent, 12,561.09 PLN for accounting services, and 12,360.71 PLN for website maintenance. Smaller costs covered office supplies, equipment, food, and 1,040 PLN for floral arrangements.

Legal Regulations and Public Controversy

The Sejm Chancellery maintains that these payments are lawful, as MPs are legally required to operate an office, which entitles them to a flat-rate allowance. Under current regulations, a parliamentarian’s long-term emigration or attempts to avoid the justice system do not serve as grounds for withholding these funds.

Legal Status and Investigation

Romanowski’s prolonged absence follows serious legal allegations regarding his management of the Justice Fund. Investigators have accused him of committing multiple offenses, forcing the politician to flee Poland and seek refuge abroad while the case continues to develop.
