NATO services are sounding the alarm regarding potential Russian sabotage in Portugal, according to a report delivered to the Portuguese parliament on Tuesday.

Russia is identified as one of the main threats to Portugal’s critical infrastructure.

Reconnaissance Activities in the Ocean

The Annual Internal Security Report notes that in the past year, protecting critical infrastructure focused on “reconnaissance activities in the ocean” to prevent possible sabotage from Russian submarines.

Russian Cyberattacks on Key State Sectors

The document states Russia “employs a wide range of tools to gain privileged access and exert pressure on its adversaries,” with cyberattacks on critical infrastructure being a primary method.

Four States Linked to Cyberattacks

Russia is named, alongside China, Iran, and North Korea, as one of four countries that conducted “part of cyberattacks on major state sectors: energy, telecommunications, healthcare, education, and finance” in the last year.

Sabotage and Intelligence Operations

These attacks originated from “entities supported by these states.” Russia is also linked to “secretly gathering confidential information, as well as sabotage directed against companies and other entities contributing to innovation in military equipment sent to Ukraine.”
