Russia declares European security guarantees for Ukraine ‘threat’

Russia’s Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that the presence of foreign troops in Ukraine, particularly European and American, poses a threat to Russian security.

Security guarantees through foreign troops

Russia does not agree with security guarantees for Ukraine being provided by foreign armies, especially European and American military contingents, said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov during an interview with Russian media.

Return to 2022 Istanbul peace talks framework

According to Peskov, all necessary security guarantees for Ukraine were included in the agreement reached during the Istanbul peace talks in 2022. The agreement outlined that Ukraine would abandon its aspirations for NATO membership and adopt a neutral status, free from military alliances. In exchange, Ukraine would receive security guarantees from the US, Russia, China, the UK, and France.

Trump’s efforts and European militarism

The Kremlin spokesperson stated that former US President Donald Trump has made significant efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, but European politicians are hampering these efforts, as he claims Europe has adopted the idea of militarism. Peskov believed that Europe continues what it started before the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. He highlighted one of the main reasons for the Ukrainian crisis as the attempt to turn Ukraine into a center of everything anti-Russian.
