Russia Reacts to US Greenland Announcements

Russia has responded to US announcements regarding Greenland. Dmitry Peskov was asked by journalists on Friday, January 16, about the Kremlin’s position on US claims to Greenland.

“He (Trump) himself said: international law is not a priority for him,” Peskov stated, as cited by TASS. “Therefore, the situation is developing in a different direction, and we, along with the rest of the world, will observe what trajectory it takes.” Peskov noted that Denmark and Greenland have assured that the island will not be sold.

Zakharova: “Neither Russia Nor China Has Announced Such Plans”

The day before, the situation in Greenland was commented on by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. According to her, the matter shows “the inconsistency of the so-called rules-based world order that the West built.”

The spokeswoman also addressed Donald Trump’s words, who argues that the US wants to take over Greenland before Russia or China do. According to Zakharova, “neither Russia nor China has announced such plans.” “First, they invented that there are some aggressors, and then that they are ready to protect someone from these aggressors,” the politician said, as quoted by Reuters.

Trump: “I Don’t Need International Law”

At the beginning of January, “New York Times” journalists asked Donald Trump if there are any limitations on his global power. “Yes, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. Only that can stop me. I don’t need international law,” said the US President.

However, he noted that his administration must comply with it. He also announced that he will be an arbiter in matters concerning the US.
