Igor and Irina R., a Russian couple accused of spying, were granted refugee status in Poland in January 2024 after receiving a government scholarship, while now detained awaiting trial for espionage and explosive‑related charges.
Arrest of the Russian Couple
Igor and Irina R. were arrested in Poland last year – Igor in July and Irina in November – on suspicion of spying for Russia.
Granting of Refugee Status
In January 2024 Polish authorities awarded the couple international protection, granting them refugee status following a positive assessment by the border guard, ABW, and police services.
Security Assessment by Polish Services
Office for Foreigners spokesperson Jakub Dudziak explained that the application was filed in 2023 and a decision issued in January 2024 after the foreigners were evaluated by SG, ABW, and police for any threat to national security.
Polish Government Scholarship and Assistance
Investigations revealed that Igor and Irina received about 75 000 PLN in government scholarship for Russian opposition figures and additional social aid; Igor had previously worked with opposition politicians, Navalny’s staff, and the Open Russia movement.
Charges and Current Detention
The couple are detained awaiting trial on charges of providing confidential information to Russian intelligence that could harm Poland, and Igor is also charged with transporting explosive materials, confirmed by authorities when he helped send a package containing such substances.
