A Russian drone violated Romanian airspace overnight between May 28 and 29, tracking into the Galati municipality before crashing into a residential building, causing a fire and injuring two people.
Defense Ministry Reports Airspace Violation
The Romanian Ministry of Defense stated that Russia resumed drone attacks on Ukraine near the border overnight. The drone entered Romanian airspace and was tracked by radar before impacting the roof of a residential building.
Following the detection of the drone, the military immediately scrambled aircraft and a helicopter. Emergency services, police, and intelligence officials arrived at the scene, where the building was evacuated and two individuals were confirmed injured.
Diplomatic Escalation and NATO Notification
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu condemned the incident as a serious and irresponsible escalation by the Russian Federation. Romania is pursuing diplomatic measures and has notified NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, while calling for the accelerated transfer of anti-drone capabilities.
The Ministry emphasized that Russia bears full responsibility for the security implications of its ongoing war. Romania remains committed to increasing international pressure on the Kremlin to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire.
Regional Security Concerns
Ukrainian forces reported a group of Russian drones targeting the port of Reni, located approximately 21 kilometers from the Romanian city of Galati. Simultaneously, authorities in Maramures County reported the discovery of a separate, unarmed drone near Basesti, which is currently under investigation.
These incidents follow a pattern of aerial violations, including a previous drone crash in the Barriera Traian area of Galati last month. In February, Romanian fighter jets were also deployed to monitor strikes, as Ukrainian air defenses intercepted a drone near the village of Kilia Veche.
