Russian Drone Strikes Residential Building in Romania

A Russian drone crashed into a residential building in Galati, Romania, following an overnight attack near the Ukrainian border, resulting in injuries and prompting immediate diplomatic condemnation.

The Incident in Galati

The Romanian Ministry of Defense reported that Russia resumed drone attacks near the Ukrainian border between May 28 and 29. A drone entered Romanian airspace and was tracked by radar until it crashed into the roof of a residential building in the southern part of the Galati municipality, igniting a fire.

Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu stated that military aircraft and a helicopter were scrambled as soon as the drone was detected. Emergency services, police, and intelligence units arrived on the scene, where they confirmed two injuries and initiated a building evacuation.

Diplomatic Fallout and Response

Romania has officially identified the drone as Russian, labeling the incident a serious and irresponsible escalation. Minister Toiu communicated the breach of international law to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and fellow allies, while formally requesting accelerated delivery of anti-drone defense capabilities.

Toiu reaffirmed that Romania considers the Russian Federation directly responsible for the illegal war and its regional security consequences. The country pledges to exert maximum pressure on Russia to force an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire.

Broader Regional Tensions

Prior to the Galati impact, Ukrainian forces tracked approximately 16 Shahed drones heading toward the port of Reni, located just 21 kilometers from the Romanian border. Separately, TVR reported that an unarmed drone with a three-meter wingspan was discovered near Basesti in Maramures County.

These events follow a series of prior border violations. Last month, a Russian drone crashed in the Barriera Traian area of Galati, leading to the summoning of the Russian ambassador. In February, Romanian fighter jets were deployed to monitor a Russian strike, during which a drone was intercepted just 100 meters from the Romanian village of Kilia Veche.
