A Russian-operated school in London’s Notting Hill is training children, including those of diplomats, in combat drone use and trench-building, sparking controversy over its military curriculum.
Russia Introduces Military Training in Schools
Russia’s Ministry of Education introduced a subject called “Fundamentals of Security and Defense of the Motherland” in 2024. According to TASS, students learn modern combat methods, Russia’s role in the world, military threats, state defense, and military service principles.
Controversial Classes in London
The Times reports that Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs runs a school in London’s Notting Hill where these classes are held. Students are taught how to operate combat drones and build trenches. Ian Garner, author of “Z Generation,” stated the training “goes far beyond basic safety principles.” “Students learn very practical military skills. This isn’t a course designed for safety in emergencies,” Garner told The Times.
Who Attends the School?
The school is attended by children of Russian diplomats and embassy staff, Russians living in the UK, and British teenagers. Journalists found that graduates include daughters of a former embassy military attaché expelled in 2024 as an undeclared military intelligence officer. The school also organized collections for Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine.
