Ryszard Petru Surprisingly Praises Rival Grzegorz Braun, Acknowledges His Talent

Polish politician Ryszard Petru criticizes rival party’s extremist views while surprisingly praising Grzegorz Braun’s political effectiveness.

Petru Criticizes Konfederacja Korony Polskiej

Polish politician Ryszard Petru, when asked about the activities of the Confederation of the Polish Crown, did not hide his critical assessment of its program and message. As stated in an interview with RMF FM, this environment brings together very different, extreme currents – from anti-vaxxers to supporters of Russia and China.

“In my opinion, all of this is inconsistent with Poland’s national interest,” said the member of Poland 2050. He added that the statements of representatives of this group in the Sejm often have a “pro-Russian and anti-market” character.

Surprising Praise for Grzegorz Braun

At the same time, Petru surprisingly assessed Grzegorz Braun himself. Although he does not agree with his views, he admitted that the Member of the European Parliament has shown political effectiveness.

“Respect for Braun, who has great talent – he managed to gather and create something interesting for people,” he stated. He added that not so long ago, similar environments were perceived as marginal, but today they function as an organized political party with real support.

Political Response to Braun’s Movement

The Poland 2050 MP did not answer unequivocally about the possibility of isolating the Confederation of the Polish Crown by other parties. However, he noted that views contradicting Polish history and the state’s interest should meet with a clear reaction from the political scene.

“Such extreme views, which are unacceptable from the point of view of Polish history, should be treated exactly like that,” he assessed.

Tense Atmosphere Around Braun

A tense atmosphere surrounds Grzegorz Braun. For several months, polls have shown that without his party, it will not be possible to form a government. A natural ally would seem to be Law and Justice (PiS). However, TVN24 reported at the end of January that PiS had received unofficial signals from the US embassy that a coalition with Grzegorz Braun’s group would mean losing American support.

After a meeting between Jarosław Kaczyński and US Ambassador Thomas Romero, the PiS leader was said to have toughened his rhetoric towards Braun and ordered party politicians to clearly distance themselves from him. There are internal disputes in PiS, as some politicians had not previously ruled out such a coalition.

Petru on Ruling Coalition

Ryszard Petru also commented on the situation within the ruling camp. He decisively ruled out the possibility of Poland 2050 leaving the coalition, calling such a scenario a “strategic and historical error.”

“If I were the prime minister and someone was blackmailing me by leaving the coalition, I would one day decide that early elections are better. You cannot govern like that,” he said and emphasized that while each coalition partner fights for their own electorate, maintaining compromise is key.
