Sabotage on Polish Railways: SIM Card Buyers Identified

Two sabotage incidents on Polish rail lines near Życzyna and Puław disrupted trains, and investigators have identified the SIM cards used to detonate the explosives.

Acts of sabotage on Polish railways

Over the weekend, an explosive charge detonated on a track near Życzyna in Garwolin County, forcing trains to use a second track and forcing a shuttle movement. A second sabotage incident damaged about 60 metres of overhead electrical traction and installed a metal loop on the tracks around Puław; the loop was torn apart by a passing train, damaging traction that struck a train carrying almost half a thousand passengers.

SIM cards traced to buyers

A discharged phone was found on the tracks, and an RMF FM reporter said on Tuesday that services already know who bought the SIM cards that were to be used to remotely detonate the charges. One card, for unexplained reasons, did not detonate. The cards, belonging to a Polish operator, were set to be registered with foreign passports, but it is unclear whether the passport holder is the real saboteur.

Prosecutor urges decisive action

The Mazovian branch of the National Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into sabotage acts of terrorist nature targeting railway infrastructure, allegedly carried out in the interest of foreign intelligence against Poland. Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek said the suspect faces a possible life sentence.
