SAFE Program: Billions for Military Modernization
The SAFE program is an EU armaments fund worth 150 billion euros. Poland could receive nearly 44 billion euros in preferential loans, including a 15% advance payment potentially available by the end of March or early April. Repayment would begin after 10 years and continue until 2070.
130 Projects for Poland’s Defense
The Chancellery of the Prime Minister announced that the funds will be allocated for over 130 projects aimed at modernizing the Polish military. Key projects include the SAN anti-drone system, Borsuk infantry fighting vehicles, Krab howitzers, air defense systems, ammunition, military infrastructure, and cybersecurity initiatives.
Government’s Position on Veto
A few days ago, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced his government’s position regarding a potential veto of the SAFE program. The government believes the financing mechanism for armaments investments could bring Poland billions of zlotys for the development of the defense industry and modernization of the army.
