Vandalism with satanic inscriptions was discovered on Saturday afternoon at the Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Passionate-Marian Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Sanctuary Vandalized with Satanic Writings
Blasphemous inscriptions were placed by vandals on several chapels along the Stations of the Cross within the Kalwaria Zebrzydowska Passionate-Marian Sanctuary, according to sanctuary spokesperson Father Tarsycjusz Bukowski.
The damaged monuments are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Police Investigation Underway
The satanic inscriptions were noticed on Saturday, May 2nd, in the afternoon. Authorities have been informed and are currently investigating the incident.
Sanctuary Condemns the Act of Vandalism
“We strongly oppose the devastation of places of worship, which are also unique monuments inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Any attack on this place is a blow to our common history and values,” reads a statement from the Sanctuary.
Appeal for Vigilance
Clergy have appealed to pilgrims and local residents to be particularly vigilant. “We ask that you report any disturbing behavior noticed on the Stations of the Cross grounds,” they added.
History of the Sanctuary
The sanctuary originated in the early 17th century at the initiative of Mikołaj Zebrzydowski, who entrusted its care to the Bernardines. The monastery and church were built between 1604 and 1609.
Around the temple, Stations of the Cross were built, comprising a complex of 42 Baroque and Mannerist chapels and churches, integrated into the landscape over an area of approximately 7 km, resembling the holy sites in Jerusalem.
