A maritime drone detonated unexpectedly at the Port of Constanta on June 5, prompting a security lockdown, local evacuations, and an ongoing investigation into the origin of the device.
Explosion at Constanta Port
A maritime drone discovered at the Civilian Port in Constanta, near the Romanian Maritime Rescue Agency, detonated spontaneously at approximately 10:30 AM on June 5. No casualties were reported.
The area has been secured by Romanian intelligence, the coast guard, and the Ministry of Defense. Residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Embassy Alert and Security Response
The Polish Embassy in Romania issued a statement via X, confirming the evacuation of the coastline due to a Red Intervention Plan following the explosion. Authorities have urged the public to strictly follow the guidelines of local services.
Investigation Into Drone Origins
Preliminary findings suggest the drone is of the same type used in the war in Ukraine. The Ministry of Defense confirmed it does not belong to the Romanian military and was not involved in recent naval exercises.
The Ministry has deployed vessels and helicopters to monitor the area. Following search operations, three additional maritime drones were recovered. The case is currently under investigation by the prosecutor’s office at the Constanta Court of Appeal.
Security Concerns and Regional Context
Nicusor Dan noted that this is the second major security incident this week, following the discovery of a sea mine between Vama Veche and 2 Mai. He emphasized that these events are a direct consequence of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
As a NATO member, Romania will maintain a high level of vigilance, continue to work closely with allies, and take all necessary actions to protect its citizens and national interests.
