Ukrainian anti-corruption officials searched the home and office of former President Zelensky’s chief of staff Andriy Jermak on Friday, raising questions about the president’s standing and future peace negotiations.
Searches Conducted at Jermak’s Residence
Ukrainian National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office raided the house and office of Andriy Jermak, former chief of staff of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The operation took place on the morning of Friday, November 28, following Jermak’s earlier announcement of resignation from the presidential office.
Legal Basis and Cooperation
Investigators stated that the searches were carried out legally as part of an ongoing inquiry. They added that the operation was part of standard investigative procedures under current law.
Jermak reportedly promised “full cooperation” with the authorities during the raid.
Impact on Zelensky’s Position
Analyst Maria Piechowska said the raids would not alter President Zelensky’s standing. “Since the beginning, Ukrainians knew that the president’s close circle was involved,” she noted.
Jermak had represented Kyiv in Geneva’s recent peace plan negotiations, highlighting his significance in the foreign policy arena.
Broader Corruption Investigation Context
Earlier this month, seven individuals were charged over a corrupt procurement scheme in Ukraine’s energy sector, including state‑owned companies and Energoatom.
Key figures in the investigation include former energy minister advisor and Energoatom head, with the chief plotter identified as Timur Mindyc, a former business partner of Zelensky during his time at the “Quarter 95” studio.
Political Perception and Trust
Public trust in Zelensky’s office has fluctuated since July’s events that saw attempts to curb anti-corruption bodies, yet the level of trust has not dropped dramatically according to recent polls.
Nevertheless, Ukrainians are increasingly critical of their president, recognizing that he must negotiate peace amid ongoing conflict.
