Segmented Speed Check Now Enforced on 13‑km Stretch of Kampinos Road

Poland has begun enforcing a segmented speed‑limit system on the 13‑km stretch of provincial road 579 in the Kampinos National Park, aiming to cut animal‑vehicle accidents.

Background

Poland has introduced a segmented speed‑limit system on a 13 km stretch of provincial road 579 (Kazuń–Leszno) within the Kampinos National Park. This is the result of years of pressure against the road, often called the “Kampinos guillotine”, which cuts the park from north to south and where dozens of wild animals are killed each year.

Incidents involving moose, deer, wild boar and other species have been repeatedly reported, prompting calls for safety measures and real action.

Implementation Details

Speed‑gates were installed near Cybulice and Leszno. A 60 km/h speed limit applies on the almost 13 km stretch, which will now be monitored by the system.

Why it matters

Excessive speed is the main cause of accidents on this roadside. Segmented speed measurement, proven effective in other parts of Poland, has been shown to reduce accidents and casualties. A slower pace gives drivers more stopping distance and more chance to spot an animal approaching the road.

Limitations

It does not solve all problems of the route, but today it is the most sensible and quickest available method to curb the scale of tragedy in the heart of the Kampinos Park. A few minutes of slower driving can save a life—human or animal.

Thanks are extended to all who have supported safety initiatives in Kampinos National Park for years. Work continues.
