Sejm Speaker Czarzasty Claims Vetting Found No Security Concerns, Calls for Presidential Apology

Polish Sejm Speaker Szymon Hołownia confirmed receiving a report from the Internal Security Agency (ABW) clearing him of security risks, and is requesting an apology from the President.

ABW Report Confirms No Threatening Contacts

Sejm Marshal Hołownia confirmed on Thursday, March 19th, in a radio interview with Tok FM, that the ABW delivered a report on him four weeks prior, including to the Presidential Palace.

He stated that he had previously requested the report at the urging of the President’s office. According to Czarzasty, the report indicated he has no contact with individuals posing a threat to Poland, nor any suspicious associates or spies.

He explained that, due to his ongoing counterintelligence protection, he would have been informed if any contacts were deemed problematic.

Czarzasty’s Challenge to the President

Czarzasty proposed that the President should publicly state: “I received a report indicating that Mr. Czarzasty is, as he stated, completely clear, and I apologize, Mr. Marshal.”

He urged the President to demonstrate courage by requesting a similar vetting of his own apartment purchase to ensure its legality. He emphasized his willingness to submit to a full security review, stating, “Let him be as brave and hand over his entire life to the services and say: please check.” He also appealed to the Presidential Palace to respond to the report.

PiS Raises Questions About Czarzasty’s Security Clearance

The Onet portal reported on Wednesday, March 18th, that the ABW had delivered a report on Czarzasty to the Presidential Palace. Representatives of the Civic Coalition (KPRP) and PiS politicians have questioned why Czarzasty did not complete a security questionnaire while serving as a member of the Sejm’s special services committee, which would have granted him access to top-secret information.

Allegations of Connections to Russian Businesswoman

PiS politicians suggest the questionnaire’s section regarding relations with foreign nationals is relevant. “Gazeta Polska” reported that Czarzasty had contact with Svetlana Czesnych, a Russian businesswoman operating in Poland, described by Mariusz Błaszczak, head of the PiS club, as “very strongly embedded in the Russian establishment.”

National Security Council Discussed Czarzasty’s Background

The issue of Czarzasty’s security clearances and alleged “eastern socio-business ties” was discussed at a meeting of the National Security Council convened by President Karol Nawrocki in February.
