Which Contracts Will Be Included in Work Seniority After Changes?
As of January 1, 2026, amendments to the Labor Code have expanded the list of periods that can be counted toward work seniority, which were previously disregarded when determining employee entitlements and benefits. This includes self-employment, work abroad, contracts for specific tasks, and membership in agricultural production cooperatives.

The new rules are being implemented in two stages. From January, the amended regulations apply to employees in the public sector. In turn, from May, they will also apply to the private sector.
Application for Seniority Counting: Which Form to Choose and What’s the Deadline?
Work seniority is not automatically counted. To take advantage of the new provisions, formalities must be completed with the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS). Missing this deadline may mean permanent loss of the ability to count past years of work toward current seniority, which will directly result in a lower vacation allowance or lack of additional bonuses.
