Schools in Warsaw and surrounding areas closed on February 2, 2026, due to extreme cold warnings of -29°C to -24°C.
Severe Cold Warnings Issued Across Mazowsze
On Monday, February 2, 2026, some schools in Warsaw and its surroundings canceled classes due to severe cold, while other institutions decided to suspend lessons for one or two days. In Mazowsze, IMGW-PIB warnings are in effect for severe cold.
Second-degree alerts cover parts of the Mazowsze province, including the counties of Ostrołęka (and the city of Ostrołęka), Ostrowsk, Węgrów, Sokołów, Siedlce (and the city of Siedlce), and Łosicki. First-degree warnings have been issued in other counties.
Temperature Forecasts and Wind Chill
According to the IMGW-PIB warning, the minimum temperature is forecast from -29°C to -24°C on the night of February 1-2 and February 2-3, from -20°C to -17°C on the night of February 3-4, and the maximum temperature during the day from -15°C to -11°C.
The warning is valid until Wednesday, February 4, at 9:00 AM, and wind with an average speed of 5-20 km/h may intensify the feeling of cold.
School Closures in Warsaw
In Warsaw on February 2, classes were canceled in the following institutions. In some districts, classes were held as usual.
On Bielany – according to information provided by Mayor Grzegorz Pietruczuk – schools operated in standard mode, with the exception of LIX High School of Sports Mastery named after J. Kusociński, where “morning training in outdoor facilities was suspended due to low temperatures”.
Closures in Surrounding Counties
Decisions to cancel classes also affected areas around Warsaw. In Miński county, all classes in post-primary schools were canceled on Monday and Tuesday (February 2 and 3) – such a decision was made by the county starosta Remigiusz Górniak.
In Sochaczew, educational activities were suspended on February 2 and 3, 2026, in the Agricultural Center for Continuing Education named after Heroes of the Battle of the Bzura 1939 and in the Center for Practical Education named after Prince of Mazovia Siemowit I.
Legal Basis for Class Suspensions
The basis for suspending classes due to weather are regulations concerning safety and hygiene in schools.
The director – with the consent of the governing body – may suspend classes for a specified period, among other things, when the external temperature measured at 9:00 PM on two consecutive days preceding the suspension is -15°C or lower.
Consent from the governing body may also be given orally (including by telephone or using electronic communication means), and its content should be documented in the form of a protocol, note, or annotation. After making a decision, the director informs students and parents in the manner adopted in a given institution, and also reports the suspension of classes to the body supervising pedagogical supervision, that is, the Mazowieckie Kuratora Oświaty.
