The University of Warsaw has entered the top 500 in the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), becoming the only Polish institution in the global elite.
University of Warsaw Secures a Top 500 Spot
The University of Warsaw has been classified within the 401–500 range in the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (known as the Shanghai Ranking). It is the sole Polish university to appear in the Top 500 list, which is dominated by US institutions. In total, seven Polish higher education institutions made the ranking this year.
Global Leadership and Methodology
The 2025 ARWU includes the top 1,000 universities worldwide, selected from over 2,500 analyzed institutions. The University of Warsaw ranks highest among Polish universities at 401–500, while Harvard University, Stanford University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology lead the global list. The ranking methodology is based on six measurable indicators: Nobel and Fields Medal winners among graduates and staff, the number of highly cited researchers (HiCi), publications in “Nature” and “Science,” indexed articles in Web of Science databases (SCI-Expanded and SSCI), and a normalized score adjusted for university size (PCP).
Other Polish Institutions in the Ranking
This year’s list features seven Polish universities. Alongside the University of Warsaw, the Jagiellonian University is ranked 501–600, while the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy (AGH) is placed in the 801–900 range. Four institutions—Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Warsaw University of Technology, and Wrocław University of Technology—occupy positions in the 901–1000 bracket. Compared to 2024, the number of Polish universities in the ARWU dropped from eight to seven.
