Sikorski Criticizes Israeli Soldiers, Demands Training in Religious Respect

Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski has criticized Israeli soldiers for desecrating religious icons in Lebanon, demanding improved training in respecting diverse religions and cultures.

Polish Ministry Condemns Religious Desecration

Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski stated on X that IDF soldiers require training in respecting other religions and cultures, noting that Gaza casualties and West Bank settler excesses are unacceptable. He emphasized that as an “occupying power,” Israel is responsible for the treatment of the people under its control.

The Ministry expressed indignation over the desecration of a Virgin Mary figure by a soldier in the town of Debl, Lebanon. The Ministry noted that such contempt for religious icons offends the sensitivity of Christians and condemned all forms of religious discrimination worldwide.

International Law and Human Rights

The Ministry cited Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion. It noted that both Israel and Lebanon are signatories to these principles, which are fundamental to human dignity.

The Ministry emphasized that the obligation to ensure respect for these rights rests with every state. In Poland, the insult of anyone’s religious feelings is a punishable offense.

Disciplinary Measures and Previous Incidents

The Israeli army has announced disciplinary consequences for the soldier involved, stating the behavior deviates from the values expected of soldiers. Preliminary findings suggest the photograph of the incident in Debl was taken several weeks ago, though it was only recently published.

In the same Maronite Christian village, another Israeli soldier destroyed a figure of Jesus in late April. Following international outcry, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the event, and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar issued an apology to Christians. The soldier responsible for the destruction was removed from combat duty and sentenced to 30 days in prison, a sentence also handed to the soldier who photographed the incident.

Regional Context

Following international criticism from Christian circles, Israel announced on April 23 the appointment of a special envoy for relations with the Christian world. These incidents occur as Israel conducts operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, a group supported by Iran that remains outside the control of the Lebanese government.
