Sikorski: Europe Must Be at Negotiating Table as War Sponsor

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski argued at Munich Security Conference that Europe deserves a place in Ukraine peace negotiations as it now finances the war effort.

Europe as War Sponsor

During his speech at the Munich Security Conference, Radosław Sikorski pointed out that Europe has become the main sponsor of military aid to Ukraine. “Now we are paying for this war. We are buying American weapons to deliver to Ukraine. If we are paying, we deserve a place at the negotiating table, because the outcome of this war will affect us,” the minister emphasized.

He noted that it was natural for the United States to lead when Washington bore the greatest burden of military support. However, according to the minister, the proportions of financing have now changed.

Criticism of Russian Declarations

Sikorski also addressed the peace announcements coming from Moscow. “Putin says he wants peace. Every dictator says he wants peace, as long as the other side surrenders,” he stated.

In the Foreign Minister’s assessment, Europe has not only the right but also the duty to participate in any negotiations. The outcome of peace talks will affect the security of the entire continent, he said. The Polish minister stated that “we must stick to the chosen course.”

Sikorski believes that cracks are visible in the Russian economy, which may mean that Russia’s resources for conducting military actions will soon run out.

Europe’s Role in Peace Process

In the panel, alongside Sikorski, participated among others Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister Taras Kaczka, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, and U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin.

The discussion focused on the division of military aid costs, continued support for Kyiv, and the potential shape of future peace talks. Sikorski emphasized that Europe cannot be just a payer but should co-decide on the conditions for ending the war. As he noted, at stake is not only the future of Ukraine but also European stability and security.
