Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated at the Munich Security Conference that Europe deserves a place at peace talks as it now bears the financial burden of Ukraine’s military support.
Europe Now Paying for War
During his speech at the Munich Security Conference, Radosław Sikorski pointed out that Europe has become the main sponsor of military aid for Ukraine. “Now we are paying for this war. We are buying American weapons to deliver them to Ukraine. If we are paying, we deserve a place at the negotiating table, because the outcome of this war will affect us,” emphasized the minister.
He noted that it was natural for the United States to lead when Washington bore the heaviest burden of military support. Currently, however, in the minister’s opinion, the proportions of funding have changed.
Criticism of Russia’s Peace Declarations
Sikorski also addressed the peace announcements coming from Moscow. “Putin says he wants peace. Every dictator says he wants peace, as long as the other side surrenders,” he stated.
In the opinion of the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Europe has not only the right but also the obligation to participate in potential negotiations. The result of peace talks will affect the security of the entire continent. The Polish minister stated that “we must stick to the chosen course.”
Europe’s Role in Peace Process
According to Sikorski, cracks are visible in the Russian economy, which may mean that Russia’s resources for conducting military operations will soon run out.
In the panel discussion alongside Sikorski participated Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister Taras Kachka, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and US Senator Elissa Slotkin. The discussion focused on the division of military aid costs, further support for Kyiv and the potential shape of future peace talks.
Sikorski emphasized that Europe cannot be merely a payer but should co-decide on the conditions for ending the war. As he noted, at stake is not only the future of Ukraine but also the stability and security of Europe.
