Sikorski Responds to Musk’s Call to Abolish the EU

Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski shot back at Elon Musk, who urged the EU’s abolition, after Musk’s 120‑million‑euro fine on X for transparency violations.

Musk Criticizes the EU and Proposes an Exit

On 6 December, Elon Musk posted on X that the European Union should be abolished and national sovereignty restored, stating he was serious and not joking. He urged Europeans to leave the EU to regain sovereignty, declared his love for Europe but rejected its bureaucratic nature, and shared Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s anti‑corruption post. Musk warned that bureaucracy would gradually choke Europe.

Sikorski’s Rebuttal

In response to Musk’s question, “How long until the EU disappears?”—and his demand to dismantle the Union—the foreign minister wrote, “Fly to Mars. There, there is censorship of Nazi salutes.” The remark references Musk’s Nazi salute gesture during Donald Trump’s inauguration speech in January 2025.

EU Commission Fines X €120 Million

On 5 December, the European Commission levied a €120 million fine on X for breaching transparency duties under the Digital Services Act. The Commission criticised X’s purchasable blue verification badge, which can mislead users into believing content originates from a verified account. It also cited the lack of transparency in X’s advertising repository and insufficient access to public data for researchers.
