Polish Foreign Minister vows military leaders will defend Polish soldiers’ honor after Trump downplayed NATO allies’ contributions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Trump’s Controversial Statements
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski commented on US President Donald Trump’s remarks suggesting NATO allies’ involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq was marginal. Sikorski responded with a brief statement: “The commander-in-chief will certainly demand accounts for honor of our soldiers,” shared on X along with a photo of Polish President Karol Nawrocki with Trump.
Trump’s January 22 Remarks
The statements come from Trump’s January 22 interview with Fox News, where he claimed the US never needed to request help from NATO allies. Trump added that alliance countries did send troops to Afghanistan and Iraq, but they “stayed somewhat back, away from the front line.”
Polish Leaders React
Poland’s Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz countered that Poland “always was, is and will be a responsible and reliable ally” that defends security when threatened. Former GROM commander Gen. Roman Polko noted that many Poles died in Middle East missions, calling Trump’s remarks a violation of the “red line” and “the cynicism of a coward who was never on the front line himself.” The Polish Military Contingent operated in Afghanistan from 2002-2021, during which 44 Polish soldiers were killed.
