A 39-year-old man died after being shot during a police intervention in Bytom on Monday, March 2, following concerns for his welfare.
Family Concerns Lead to Police Intervention
The incident occurred on Monday, March 2. Police in Bytom received a report from a concerned family member who feared for their relative’s life. Since December, they had had no contact with him. “Upon arriving at the specified address, no one opened the door, so firefighters present at the location forcibly entered. After entering the apartment, a 39-year-old man rushed aggressively and agitated at the officers. Dressed in a winter jacket and holding a sabre in his hand, he threatened to use it and then barricaded himself in the premises,” reported the Bytom City Police Headquarters.
Confrontation Results in Shooting
Police officers arrived at the scene, who spent over two hours talking with the man, as well as counter-terrorist officers who forcibly entered the apartment. “During the intervention, the attacker rushed at the police with two sabres. As he was highly agitated and did not respond to commands to discard dangerous tools, in a situation of direct threat to life and health, police were forced to use service weapons,” described the police.
Man Dies After Medical Treatment
The wounded 39-year-old was handed over to a medical rescue team. He was taken to a hospital, where despite medical assistance, he died several hours later. Proceedings in this case are conducted under the supervision of a prosecutor.
