Silicon Valley Pushes for ‘Freedom City’ in Greenland as Trump Eyes Territory

Silicon Valley investors pressure Trump administration to build a libertarian ‘freedom city’ in Greenland, per Reuters.

Libertarian “Freedom City” Concept

Reuters reported in April that American investors aim to construct a “freedom city” on Greenland. This libertarian concept, proposed by Donald Trump during his presidential campaign, envisions up to 10 centers the size of Washington D.C., built on federal land. The Greenland project would feature minimal regulations for corporations and operate as a technological startup hub.

Potential infrastructure includes microreactors, high-speed rail, space facilities, autonomous vehicles, and an artificial intelligence center. Business interests backing the plan have reportedly lobbied the Trump administration to advance the Greenland initiative.

Support from Tech Investors

Silicon Valley figures Peter Thiel and Marc Andreessen support the “freedom city” concept. Thiel, a PayPal and Palantir co-founder, has long advocated for deregulated cities. Ambassador Ken Howery, a Trump appointee to Denmark and former Thiel collaborator, has taken the investors’ plans seriously according to Reuters.

Thiel and Andreessen are part of the business group endorsing the Greenland “freedom city” project.

Growing Tech Industry Influence

While Trump cites security reasons for U.S. control of Greenland, Reuters notes the “freedom city” plan reveals “growing influence of tech magnates” in America. Journalist Sylwia Czubkowska suggests the Greenland dispute involves both security ambitions and a tech-promoted startup-city vision.
