Six-figure salaries for doctors at emergency departments. NIL spokesperson: Even 150,000 won’t attract anyone

A hospital in Bielsko-Biała is offering up to 108,000 złotys for an emergency medicine specialist, but doctors still refuse to work in such departments.

High salaries in Bielsko-Biała

A hospital in Bielsko-Biała advertised for an emergency medicine specialist, offering a monthly gross salary of 72,240 to 108,000 złotys. “Gazeta Wyborcza” reports this is not an isolated case.

Warsaw’s emergency department pay

Journalists found that doctors in Warsaw hospitals can earn 5,000 to 6,000 złotys gross for a 24-hour shift. Most work over 10 such shifts, some even 20. “No one is a suicide case. Doctors in emergency departments know how to schedule shifts—first difficult, then easier, then average,” said a manager at a Warsaw hospital.

Doctors refuse emergency work

“There are places with such salaries, but no one wants to come. I’ll say more: even for 150,000 złotys, they won’t find anyone. It’s not about money, but patient numbers, error risks, workloads, and hospital cooperation with emergency departments,” said Jakub Kosikowski, spokesperson for the National Chamber of Physicians, in an interview with Rynek Zdrowia.

Jan Śpiewak on healthcare disparities

Jan Śpiewak, president of the Bezpieczna Polska Foundation, highlighted another issue: “Private psychiatric consultations for children (20 minutes) cost up to 700 złotys, while a school in Świętokrzyskie is collecting soap for a children’s psychiatric hospital in Kielce. Poland in G20. Without the EU, we’d be at best Bangladesh,” he wrote.
