Slim Chances for US-Iran Deal Amid Rising Tensions

US envoy Steve Witkoff to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

Diplomatic Meeting Amid Naval Deployment

On Friday, American envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The talks are scheduled amid rising tensions after Washington sent a naval strike group to the Middle East, led by the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier.

Military Threats and Warnings

US President Donald Trump emphasized that this is an “even bigger” armada than the one previously sent to the region of Venezuela, and threatened the use of force if Iran does not agree to an agreement. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned that any attack on his country would lead to the outbreak of a regional war.

Uncertain Terms for Potential Agreement

However, before the meeting, both sides assure they want a ceasefire. It is not clear, however, what kind of agreement they would be willing to accept or what compromises they are ready to make.
