Slovak Premier Fires Blunt Words at EU: “If It Must Die, Let It Die”

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico delivered a sharp lecture in the National Assembly on December 11, calling EU proposals for Ukraine aid “silly waste” and accusing the bloc of abandoning its core values.

Letter to the European Council

On December 11, Fico read aloud a letter he had sent to EU Council President Antonio Coşe addressing new Commission proposals for Ukraine aid that would tap frozen Russian assets. He vowed that the next European Council session would reject any plan covering Ukraine’s military expenditure for the coming years, arguing that spending billions on arms prolongs war.

Fico warned that using the frozen assets could endanger U.S. peace efforts and called the EU’s stance “wrong and ineffective.”

Blunt Critique of EU Values

During his speech, Fico quoted “If the EU is doomed to die, let it die,” echoing a U.S. strategy document that accused the bloc of abandoning its fundamental principles. He declared that continued disregard for sovereignty, tradition and history would lead to the EU’s demise.

U.S. National Security Strategy Emphasises European Autonomy

The U.S. White House unveiled a new national‑security strategy on December 5, dedicating a chapter to Europe. It stresses that European allies must shoulder more responsibility for their own security instead of relying solely on the U.S. The strategy also states that the United States will back those who oppose values promoted by the EU, including immigration policies.

It criticises “unrealistic expectations” of ending the war in Ukraine and cautions against further expansion of the alliance.
