Slovak police have launched an investigation into Prime Minister Robert Fico following a complaint filed by the opposition alleging treason and other crimes.
Opposition Files Complaint Against Fico
Branislav Gröhling, head of the opposition party Freedom and Solidarity, announced the case in social media, stating he filed a complaint against Fico a month ago suspecting treason and other offenses. Gröhling reported over 13,000 people joined the complaint, making it the largest criminal complaint in Slovak history.
The opposition confirmed the case has been transferred to the police.
Investigation Focuses on Energy Supply to Ukraine
The complaint was initially passed from the Prosecutor General’s Office to the national prosecutor’s office, and then to the police. Gröhling expressed confidence that Fico is suspected of serious crimes and appreciated the authorities’ handling of the case, preventing it from being covered up. The investigation reportedly concerns Fico’s statements and actions regarding potentially halting emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine.
Multiple Charges Alleged
The opposition alleges several offenses, including abuse of public office, treason, inhumane treatment, mismanagement of assets, and even terrorism. The impetus for the complaint stemmed from Fico’s actions and statements concerning the suspension of emergency energy deliveries to Ukraine, as well as the possibility of Slovakia joining a blockade of EU loans to Kyiv.
Fico Hardens Stance on Ukraine
Tensions surrounding the policies of Bratislava and Budapest towards Ukraine have recently escalated. Slovak media noted that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán refused to unblock loans for Ukraine, and Robert Fico later admitted he might support a similar blockade. Similarly, Orbán’s decision to halt gas supplies to Ukraine, citing the protection of Hungary’s energy security, was also highlighted.
