Slovenia Election: Freedom Movement Leads, Jansha’s Party Second in Exit Polls

Slovenia’s Freedom Movement, led by Prime Minister Robert Golob, secured the most votes in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, according to exit poll results.

The Freedom Movement, led by Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob, received the highest support in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, as indicated by an exit poll published by the “Delo” daily newspaper’s portal.

Golob’s party is projected to win 30 seats in the 90-member Slovenian National Assembly, while the Slovenian Democratic Party of former Prime Minister Janez Jansha is expected to secure 27 seats, according to the exit poll.

Parliamentary Composition

According to the poll, other parties expected to enter parliament include the right-wing New Slovenia, the Social Democrats, the left-wing Social Democrats, the green Spring, the center-right Democrats, and the Resni.ca citizen’s movement.

Pre-Election Rhetoric

Prior to the vote, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob warned that “democracy and sovereignty” of the country could no longer be taken for granted. His opponent, three-time Prime Minister Janez Jansha, stated that the elections were equivalent to a “referendum on whether the nation can regain its state.”

Election Details

Sunday’s elections were the tenth in the history of independent Slovenia, which gained independence in 1991. By 4:00 PM, 859,909 voters had cast their ballots, representing 50.73 percent of approximately 1.7 million eligible citizens.

Polling stations were open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Slovenians were electing 90 deputies to the National Assembly, with 88 members chosen through proportional representation in eight electoral districts, and two additional seats reserved for the Italian and Hungarian national minorities.
