South Korean Factory Fire Injures Dozens, Leaves Workers Missing

A fire at a South Korean factory erupted after 1 p.m. local time, leaving 24 people seriously injured and 14 workers unaccounted for.

Fire Breaks Out, Workers Impacted

At the time the fire began, around 1:00 PM local time (5:00 AM in Poland), 170 people were working at the facility. Authorities have confirmed that contact has not been established with 14 employees.

Many of the injured suffered from toxic smoke inhalation and injuries sustained while attempting to escape the burning building by jumping from windows, according to Yonhap.

Extensive Response and Damage

90 fire engines and over 200 firefighters have been dispatched to the scene, with support from forestry helicopters. Local media footage shows thick plumes of gray-black smoke rising above the complex.

One of the two buildings in the complex has been completely destroyed.

President Orders Full Mobilization

President Lee Jae-myung has directed authorities to “mobilize all available resources” to control the fire and rescue people. The National Fire Agency has issued a rare nationwide mobilization order, reserved for disasters exceeding local government response capabilities.

Hazardous Materials Complicate Rescue Efforts

Rescue workers are unable to enter the burning building due to the risk of collapse. Approximately 200 kg of sodium is inside, which could cause an explosion if it comes into contact with water, reports the Korea Joongang Daily.
