Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles confirmed a ban on the use of Spanish airspace and bases for operations related to the war in Iran, informed to the US.
Spain Denies US Access to Bases
Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles confirmed reports from the newspaper “El Pais” stating that Washington was clearly informed about the ban from the outset. Robles stated that the US armed forces were informed that permission was not granted for the use of bases or Spanish airspace for actions related to the war in Iran.
Spain also refused the US access to its bases.
Madrid Rejects Iran Operation Support
The government in Madrid has repeatedly emphasized that it also did not agree to the use of the Rota and Moron bases in southern Spain by the Americans in actions against Iran, which it considers illegal. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez previously stated in parliament that all plans related to this operation, including those concerning refueling aircraft, were rejected.
Ban Extended to Aircraft Based in Europe
According to the newspaper, the ban also applies to American aircraft stationed in other European countries. A map published by the newspaper shows that aircraft involved in attacks on Iran bypassed Spanish airspace.
Operation Complicated by Spanish Refusal
“El Pais” assessed that Spain’s refusal to cooperate complicated the course of the operation against Iran. The newspaper also noted that American bases in Spain are still used for other missions covered by a bilateral agreement with Washington.
