After Włodzimierz Czarzasty became Poland’s new speaker on November 18, he announced a decision that would exclude parliamentary groups from the Senior Convention, sparking a sharp response from left‑leaning parties.
Czarzasty’s First Action: Excluding Parliamentary Groups From Senior Convention
Two days after taking office, Włodzimierz Czarzasty announced that parliamentary groups would be denied participation in the Senior Convention. Polsat News reported that this move would serve as a clear signal in the competitive dynamics among left‑wing factions.
Left‑Wing Reaction: Satirical Jokes About Printer Ink
Polish social‑media commentator Marcin Fijołek posted on X that the decision was a “clear ruthless signal in the competition on the left.” The remark was shared by the chairman of the Razem party. Adrian Zandberg, a member of the SLD coalition, responded with the quip “Just take our printer ink, Włodko xD” and later added that “before SLD starts taking it seriously—I was joking, we don’t have a printer.” The comments highlighted the left’s frustration with the move.
Speaker’s Clarification on Convention Participation
During an interview on TVN24’s “Fakty po Faktach,” Czarzasty explained that convention seats are filled by parliamentary groups and clubs elected by voters during the elections. Groups formed within parliament—such as those resigning from other clubs—may be invited or not by the speaker. He said the final decision would be taken at the next Senior Convention, scheduled for two weeks later. Czarzasty noted that Razem, Confederation, Crown of Poland, and Free Republicans were “invited by the speaker.” He emphasized his support for left‑wing consolidation, adding that “Mrs. Joanna Senyszyn, Party Razem, will always be close to my heart. I will ensure there is one list; if they do not want it, we will convince them.”
Background: A Shift in Parliamentary Leadership
On November 18, the Sejm elected Włodzimierz Czarzasty as speaker with 236 votes in favor, 209 against, and 2 abstentions. The change followed a coalition agreement among the Civic Coalition, PSL, Polish 2050, and the Left, formed after the October 15, 2023 elections. The previous speaker, Szymon Hołownia of Polish 2050, resigned halfway through his term and intends to run for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
