Speed Cameras Activated on 12.9km Section Through Kampinos National Park

Speed cameras began operating Monday on a 12.9km section of DW579 through Kampinos National Park, enforcing a 60 km/h limit to reduce accidents and animal casualties.

System Implementation

On Monday, March 9, at 8:00 AM, the section speed measurement system was activated on provincial road number 579, on the section between Leszno and Cybulice Duże, which passes through Kampinos National Park. The controlled section has a speed limit of 60 km/h, and the length of the measurement section is 12.9 km.

The new system is intended to enforce compliance with speed limits on a route that has raised concerns for years among residents, road workers, and park representatives. The device was purchased by the Mazovian Voivodeship Self-Government – Mazovian Provincial Road Management in Warsaw and transferred to the Road Transport Inspection under a loan agreement.

Historical Context

The location was not chosen by chance. The DW579 section cutting through Kampinos National Park has long been called the “kampinoska gilotyna” (kampinoska guillotine). This is a route where drivers often traveled too fast despite the existing limits, resulting not only in dangerous traffic incidents involving people but also numerous collisions and collisions with wild animals.

Excessive speed was previously identified as the main problem on this road when implementing this solution.

Animal Safety Statistics

The scale of the problem is shown by data cited by Kampinos National Park. According to previously published KPN statistics, only in 2024, 61 animals died on this section, including five moose, which are one of the symbols of the park. Among the victims were also roe deer, wild boars, and wolves.

Reducing the number of such incidents was one of the main arguments for installing the section speed measurement system.

Project Goals

The investment was previously promoted as a way to calm traffic and increase safety for both drivers and animals moving through the forest area. The project description submitted to the Mazowsz Citizen’s Budget emphasized that slower driving gives the driver more time to react and increases the chance of avoiding a collision.

The activation of the system means that drivers traveling through this section of DW579 will be charged based on their average speed over the entire section. In practice, this should result in calmer driving, reduced risk of accidents, and fewer animal collisions on one of the most problematic routes in the Kampinos National Park area.

“Today at 8:00 AM we activated the section speed measurement on DW579 Leszno – Cybulice Duże in the area of Kampinos National Park in Mazowieckie Voivodeship. Permitted speed on the measurement section: 60 km/h. Length of the measurement section: 12.9 km. The device was purchased by the Mazovian Voivodeship Self-Government – Mazovian Provincial Road Management in Warsaw and transferred to the Road Transport Inspection under a loan agreement,” reported the Automatic Road Traffic Monitoring Center.
