Stanisław Kracik to be Appointed Commissioner of Kraków Following Miszalski Recall

Following a local referendum that resulted in the removal of Aleksander Miszalski from office, the Polish government is set to appoint Stanisław Kracik as the interim commissioner for Kraków.

Formal Decision Pending

Following the referendum in which Kraków residents voted to remove Aleksander Miszalski from his post, the government must designate a commissioner. This official will lead the municipal administration until early elections are held.

According to TVN24, the choice has fallen on the deputy to the outgoing president, Aleksander Miszalski (KO). The station reported on Tuesday morning, May 26, that the political decision has been finalized. Prime Minister Donald Tusk is expected to formally announce the appointment on Wednesday, a move confirmed by Stanisław Kracik himself in a telephone interview.

Political Context and Selection

Kracik had been identified as the frontrunner for the commissioner role previously. On Monday, the local portal LoveKraków.pl reported that his name was the most frequently mentioned in discussions among political figures responsible for deciding who would temporarily take the helm at the city hall.

Administrative Background

Stanisław Kracik joined the Kraków city government in 2024, when Aleksander Miszalski entrusted him with the position of deputy mayor, where he was primarily responsible for infrastructure and investments. Previously, he served for years as the mayor of Niepołomice and later as the Voivode of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship.

This administrative experience served as a key argument for his appointment. In government circles, he is characterized as a technical candidate tasked with focusing on the daily management of the city until the upcoming elections. Kracik previously ran for mayor of Kraków in 2010 but lost in the second round to Jacek Majchrowski, who held the position for 22 years before being succeeded by the recently recalled Aleksander Miszalski.
