Storm Claudia Approaches England and Wales
On Friday, 14 November, the Met Office issued an orange weather warning for parts of England and Wales as Storm Claudia was expected to bring intense rainfall and possible flooding. The warning remained in force until the end of the day, while a yellow rain alert covering much of England applied from 6 am for 24 hours.
Forecasts predict up to 150 mm of rain in some areas.
Potential Disruptions and Safety Warnings
Met Office meteorologists warned of possible power outages, travel disruptions, road closures, and building damage. Travelers were advised to exercise caution, and strong winds were forecast alongside heavy rain.
Fatalities Reported in Portugal
The storm, called Claudia by Spain’s meteorological service, also prompted alerts in Spain and Portugal. According to the portal Portugal Resident, two deaths have been recorded. A senior couple aged 88, living on the outskirts of Setúbal, died when floodwater entered their home; witnesses said the property was “completely submerged” and water “reached the windows.”
Widespread Power Losses in Portugal
Approximately 20,000 households across Portugal were completely without electricity due to the storm.
