Storm Front Approaches Poland: Sunday Threat of Thunderstorms, Followed by Monday’s Chill

An Atlantic front brings Sunday storms to central and southern Poland, followed by nationwide cooling Monday.

Where Storms Could Hit Sunday

Sunday, March 15, began calmly in the east and southeast, but a front associated with an Atlantic low is moving in from the west. By afternoon, clouds are expected to intensify over Łódzkie, Opole, and Małopolska provinces, where thunderstorms are possible. IMGW forecasts widespread heavy cloud cover in the west and north with intermittent rain, while clearer skies persist longer in the east.

Risk of Thunderstorms on Sunday

The highest risk for thunderstorms on Sunday stretches from central to southern Poland, primarily affecting Łódzkie, Opole, and Małopolska. IMGW additionally notes local storms are possible in the south and southeast over the next two days. Temperatures will vary: 6-10°C in the west, around 15°C in the center, and locally 16-18°C in the southeast. Coastal areas will be cooler, near 5°C.

Monday: Rain, Storms, and Mountain Snow

On Monday, March 16, the cool front continues to impact Poland’s weather. IMGW expects moderate to heavy cloud cover with passing rain across most areas, and local storms in the east later in the day. Rain mixed with snow, and snowfall, will occur in the Sudetes and Carpathian peaks. In the Tatra Mountains, overnight snow accumulation may reach 7 cm.

Temperatures and Cooling Trend

Daytime highs on Monday will mostly range from 8-12°C. The southeast will remain warmer at 13-17°C, while Pomerania and Kuyavia could see only about 6°C, and the Hel Peninsula around 4°C. After a warm weekend, significant cooling is expected next week, with temperatures nationwide dropping to 8-10°C from Monday. The coldest night is forecast from Wednesday to Thursday, with near-freezing or sub-zero temperatures widely.
