Sudden Weather Shift: Arctic Air Brings Sharp Chill and Snow

Poland’s meteorological institute says arctic air will bring a sharp cool down and snowfall ahead of Christmas, with a break expected on December 14.

Weather Forecast from IMGW

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) issued a long‑term forecast based on the ECMWF EPS model. Synoptic specialist Agnieszka Prasek highlighted the polar vortex over the Arctic as the key driver for upcoming weather in Poland.

Arctic Air Arrival

According to the forecast, the polar vortex will begin to dismantle during a stratospheric warming episode. It is expected that the breakdown will become evident from Sunday, December 14, when temperatures will fall below zero.

Temperature Drop Before Christmas

Between December 15 and 21, daytime temperatures are projected to range from 4 to 7 °C across the majority of the country, with minimal frost occurrence. Just before Christmas, temperatures will decline to about 4 °C in the west, 3 °C in the centre and 1–2 °C in the foothills.

Snow and Freezing on the Holidays

During Christmas evenings, icing may occur. Agnieszka Prasek warned that chilled, arctic air is likely to fall from the east to the south, bringing snowfall. She added that a snow cover could persist longer if temperatures remain sufficiently low.
